He received many All-OVC honors while playing collegiate basketball at Murray State University (2013-2015), where he also guided the Racers to the NCAA Tournament in 2015. Although he attended La Lumiere School in Indiana, he played his college basketball at Murray State University.
Payne is a point guard who has developed a good all-around game thanks to his scoring, playmaking, and defensive abilities. He has earned recognition for all of these abilities.
Payne was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the fourteenth overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft. After playing for the Thunder from 2015 to 2017, he went on to play for the Chicago Bulls from 2017 to 2019, the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2019 to the present, and the Phoenix Suns from 2020 to the present.
