From the inaugural session of the ICC T20 World Cup to the recent edition, the tournament witnessed different teams winning the trophy, from India winning the first T20 Cup to Australia dominating the Twenty20 in recent years.
The Twenty20 keeps audiences worldwide entertained with fabulous performances, from Matthew Hayden and Shahid Afridi making the fastest runs to Wanindu Hasaranga and Sam Curran taking wickets in a short time.

First T20 World Cup
According to the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup rules, teams were ranked based on their points, bowling strike rate, wins, net run rate, and head-to-head results. The 12 teams participated, divided into four groups with the two talented teams from each group going to the next level.
The Super 8s followed the league system, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals. After playing Group stages, 4 teams were eliminated, and the other teams qualified for the Super 8s.
The first match kicks off in Johannesburg, with India defeating New Zealand by 10 runs.
Similarly, many matches happened between different teams. Finally, Pakistan, India, Australia, and New Zealand secured a place in the Semi-finals.
Winner of 2007 T20: India
At last, Pakistan and India got qualified for the Finals. India chose to bat first after winning the toss. Gautam Gambhir scored the most runs for India with 75, and Rohit Sharma finished unbeaten with 30 runs. Pakistan’s Mohammad Asif grabbed 4 wickets, and Umar Gul took 3.
When it was Pakistan’s turn to bat, Misbah-ul-Haq scored the highest with 43 runs, but Pakistan couldn’t reach the target, falling short by 5 runs and losing the game to India. Irfan Pathan was India’s standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for 16 runs, and was awarded the Man of the Match. India lifted the trophy of the first T20 World Cup and became one of the Top Teams of Every T20 World Cup
Second T20 World Cup
The rules were the same as of 2007 t20 but there was a key difference in format and teams. The 2009 tournament included nine Test-playing nations and three associate nations.
After playing Group Stages, Australia, Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Scotland were eliminated. The other teams prepared themselves to appear in Super 8s.
After the Super 8s, West Indies, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka qualified for the semi-finals. South Africa lost a match to Pakistan, and Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 57 runs.
Winner of 2009 T20: Pakistan
Sri Lanka and Pakistan faced each other in the finals. In the final match at Lord’s, Sri Lanka chose to bat after winning the toss. They struggled early on, losing quick wickets. Sanath Jayasuriya scored 17 runs, but Sri Lanka kept losing wickets. Sangakkara and Chamara Silva added some runs, but the wickets kept falling.
Angelo Mathews and Sangakkara stabilized the innings, taking the score to 138/6. Pakistan’s openers, Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan, started well, adding 48 runs. Pakistan chased the target in 18.4 overs and won the cup, with Shahid Afridi securing the win and earning the Man of the Match award, and became the top performer of the 2009 T20 World Cup. After this Pakistan also became one of the Top Teams of Every T20 World Cup.
Third T20 World Cup
This tournament witnessed the most amazing performances, with Afghanistan first appearing at the ICC T20 World Cup.
The rules and format were the same. In the Group Stage, the 12 teams were divided into four groups. Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and Ireland did not make it to the Super 8s.
In Super 8s, Sri Lanka, England, Pakistan, and Australia played in the semi-finals.
The audience was hoping that their favorite team would make the finals. After all, Australia beat Pakistan by 3 wickets, while England defeated Sri Lanka by 7 wickets.
Winner of 2010 T20: England
Australia and England fought in the final to grab the trophy. Australia batted first, scoring 147 runs. England chased it down comfortably, reaching 148 runs with Craig Kieswetter (63 runs) and Kevin Pietersen (47 runs) leading the charge.
In Barbados, England beat Australia by seven wickets with three overs left. It was England’s first ICC tournament win after several losses in previous finals, which makes it one of the Top Teams of every T20 World Cup.
Fourth T20 World Cup
For the first time, The 2012 T20 World Cup was hosted by an Asian Country, Sri Lanka. The tournament witnessed unexpected turns in things like West Indies qualifying for the Super 8 stage without winning a single match in the initial round.
The pattern was the same as before. Pakistan, Australia, Sri Lanka, and West Indies reached the semi-finals. Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 16 runs, and West Indies beat Australia by 74 runs.
Winner of 2012 T20: West Indies
Sri Lanka faced West Indies in the finals. West Indies set a target of 137/6, with Sri Lanka falling short at 101, despite Ajantha Mendis’ 4 wickets for 12 runs. West Indies triumphed over Sri Lanka at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium. Marlon Samuels shone, earning Player of the Match for his 78 runs.
This win marked West Indies’ first ICC World Twenty20 victory since 2004, a significant moment for the team, making them one of the Top Teams of Every T20 World Cup.
Fifth T20 World Cup
The 2014 ICC World Twenty20 occurred in Bangladesh from March 16 to April 6, 2014. It was a historic event as it was the first time 16 teams participated, comprising all 10 full members and 6 associate members who qualified through the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier.
Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 27 runs to reach the finals. In the semi-finals, India defeated South Africa by 6 wickets.
Winner of 2014 T20: Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field first. India posted 130/4 in their 20 overs, with Virat Kohli scoring 77 runs from 58 balls. In response, Sri Lanka chased down the target, reaching 134/4 in 17.5 overs.
Kumar Sangakkara was the standout performer, scoring an unbeaten 52 runs from 35 balls. Rangana Herath was instrumental with the ball for Sri Lanka, taking 1 wicket for 23 runs in his 4 overs. Sri Lanka emerged victorious by defeating India by six wickets becoming one of the Top Teams of Every T20 World Cup.
Sixth T20 World Cup
The 2016 ICC World Twenty20 was the sixth time they held this cricket tournament. Sixteen teams joined in, ten full members of the ICC and six qualifying through the 2015 World Twenty20 Qualifier. The tournament had three parts: a starting round, a Super 10 round, and then knockout games.
Winner Of 2016 T20: West Indies
England and the West Indies were playing in the final match for the second time. Before, England won in 2010, and the West Indies won in 2012. The West Indies won the toss and chose to bowl first.
England made a total of 155 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. Joe Root scored the most runs for England with 54 runs from 36 balls. For the West Indies, Carlos Brathwaite took 3 wickets for 23 runs, and Samuel Badree took 2 wickets for 16 runs, including a maiden over.
They needed 19 runs from the last over, bowled by Ben Stokes. Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes to win the match. Marlon Samuels scored 85 runs, not out of 66 balls, which is the highest score in a World T20 final. West Indies became the 1st team to win 2nd T20 World Cup and became one of the Top Teams of Every T20 World Cup.
Seventh T20 World Cup
Due to COVID-19, the tournament was postponed for two years and moved to November 2022 from its original 2020 schedule. It was supposed to be held in India but ended up being played in Oman and the UAE.
The tournament included 45 matches. Australia beat Pakistan by 5 wickets, and New Zealand triumphed over England by 5 wickets.
Winner of 2021: Australia
New Zealand and Australia met in the finals. Australia won the toss and decided to bowl first. New Zealand scored 172 runs for 4 wickets in 20 overs, with Kane Williamson scoring 85. Australia’s Josh Hazlewood took 3 wickets for 16 runs.
Australia chased the target in 18.5 overs, winning by 8 wickets. Mitchell Marsh scored 77 runs, not out, and David Warner made 53 runs. Their partnership of 92 runs secured the win. Mitchell Marsh was named Player of the Match.
This win was Australia’s first T20 World Cup title and their sixth ICC trophy making them one of the Top Teams of Every T20 World Cup. David Warner, with 289 runs, was named Player of the Tournament. It was a remarkable comeback after losing to Bangladesh earlier in the year.
Eighth T20 World Cup
The eighth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup was held in Australia. The tournament saw several notable performances, including a century by Rilee Rossouw and a hat-trick by Wanindu Hasaranga. New Zealand lost the game to Pakistan, and India lost the match to England in the Semi-finals.
Winner of 2022 T20: England
England chose to field after winning the coin toss. Pakistan batted first and scored 137 runs for 8 wickets. Shan Masood was their top scorer with 38 runs. England’s Sam Curran took 3 wickets for 12 runs.
In the second innings, England scored 49 runs for 3 wickets in the first six overs. England needed 41 runs from five overs. Ben Stokes scored his first T20I fifty, and England won with six balls remaining. England took revenge on Pakistan in the 1992 World Cup at the majestic Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG.
After 12 years, they won their second T20 World Cup title, matching West Indies’ record for the most titles and became one of the Top Teams of Every T20 World Cup. They also became the first men’s team to hold the ODI and T20 World Cups simultaneously.
