    What is Test Cricket?

Test cricket is the most original and prestigious format of cricket. The first ever official game of cricket was played in test format between England and Australia in 1877. Test cricket is defined by patience, skills and tactical depth. Unlike other cricket formats like ODI and T20, test cricket needs more skills from a cricket player.

The game lasted 5 days, where every day is divided into 3 parts. In test cricket, a maximum of 90 overs is bowled per day. In these 3 sessions, teams get lunch and a tea break to rebuild their strategy.

Unlike other formats like ODI and T20, teams must prepare well to win a test game. In T20 cricket , teams mostly rely on blind power hitting, in which many times the stronger side lost the game against the weaker side.  Check out rules of T20 cricket.

But Test cricket really checks the temperament of sides. Therefore, every ICC-recognized side does get Test status. Now, only 12 sides have the Test status by the ICC.

And in these 12 sides, 9 sides occur in the World Test Champions WTC.  On the other side, ICC has given the status to play T20 cricket to more than 100 countries. Therefore, the T20 World Cup contains 20 teams.

    Test Cricket Rules Explained

Basic rules of cricket are the same in all formats of the game. But there are a few rules that make Test cricket unique from other formats of the game. First, Test cricket lasts 5 days, which tests the temperament and skills of players.

Every team will bowl a maximum of 90 overs in a test game on each day. In test cricket, there is no limit on the number of overs for a bowler. Therefore, there are only two escapes for the bowling side to get all the wickets of the batting side to win the game. Therefore, batters get their full time to bat as long as possible.

But batting does not seem to be easy for a batter in a test game because of the fielding rules. Teams can set as many fielders as possible anywhere in the ground. Bowling can set 5 slips or spread the field all over the ground.

That is why when the bowl swings, batting seems to be difficult when bowling has slips on. In test cricket, 90 overs are divided into 3 parts. In a day game, after 25-30 overs, there is a break, which is called lunch break. After that break, another break comes after the same number of overs bowled. That break is called Tea Break. After the tea break, after 25-30 minutes, the day is called off.

Where white-ball cricket has only 2 innings, one for bowling and the other for batting, but Test cricket consists of 4 innings. When 2 innings complete, the remaining runs of dominating sides will be added as lead for next innings.  And these 2 innings of the test game act as the deciding factor of the game. Whichever team is able to chase or defend the target will win the test game.

Another unique rule, which is normal in test cricket, is declaring the innings.  Suppose a batting side has scored enough runs without being all out. It became the decision of the batting side to declare the innings and invite the bowling side to bat.

Latest Updates and Trends in Test Cricket

Test Cricket lost its fan base in the recent decade because of the massive boom of T20 cricket. Therefore, to make it more interesting and thrilling, ICC made massive steps to retain the thrill and authenticity of the game. First, ICC announced an ICC tournament for Test cricket.

    World Test Championship (WTC)

WTC builds up interest in nations to play ICC test cricket with full courage and interest.  World Test Championship tournament started in 2019, just after the ICC ODI World Cup.

In this tournament, 9 nations take part and play 6 test series in a 2-year cycle. And at the end of the cycle, the top 2 sides will play the final of WTC. For now, 3 editions of WTC have been played. In these 3 editions, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa lifted the title of WTC.

    Latest Technology in Test Cricket

ICC has used the latest rules and technology to make the test cricket fair and understandable for everyone. ICC announced the use of the latest technology of DRS, like Hawk-Eye and Ultra-edge, to challenge umpire decisions. ICC announced the stop-clock rule, which states that bowling side should start the over in 60 seconds.

    Conclusion

Test cricket is the main pillar of cricket, which is played worldwide. Suppose a player can crack the test cricket whether as a batter or bowler, it is named the greatest of his country. Players like Don Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Joe Root, Steve Smith , and Viv Richards played as the greatest batters in test cricket. In bowling, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, James Anderson and Muttiah Muralitharan get the better of batters. Test cricket is the ultimate test for any player to achieve greatness in cricket.
