Sacking of Wayne Rooney from Birmingham City in 2024 | Story of Complete Downfall

Wayne Rooney is a former English Professional Footballer and manager. He played for England from 2000 till 2018. His managerial career started in 2020, two years after his playing career ended. Rooney was the most recent manager of Birmingham City FC. He has been the manager of Derby County from 2020-2022, then he joined D.C United for the 2022-2023 season. The sacking of Wayne Rooney from Birmingham City FC became headlines for the football world.

Details of Contract of Wayne Rooney

The former manager of Birmingham City FC was sacked by the management only 83 days after his consolidation with the championship club. His career with Birmingham City FC only lasted for 15 matches, and he lost his job. 

In October 2023, Rooney was appointed manager for a three-and-a-half-year contract by the EFL Championship club, Birmingham City FC. When he was appointed, the team was at the number 6 position, and expectations were very high for him. 

The teams have focused on FIFA Club World Cup but the former striker of England and Manchester United couldn’t make it to the expectations as the team only managed to win twice in 15 matches. Birmingham City FC’s management sacked him. During his tenure, the team lost 9 matches, and fans turned on when the 

Birmingham football team lost a match by 3-0 against Leeds on New Year’s Day. After this, the club’s position worsened and moved to 20th. The fans demanded the immediate sacking of Wayne Rooney from Birmingham Club. It almost faces a relegation to League One as the club is only 6 points above the drop zone.

Birmingham City FC’s Statement

The management released a statement on Sacking of Wayne Rooney on January 2, 2024, which states that; 

“Birmingham City has today parted company with the manager Wayne Rooney along with first-team coach Carl Robinson”. 

The management was disappointed as both couldn’t meet the expectations, saying,

“Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset. Therefore, the board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the football club”.

Moreover, the management thanked the manager and head coach and wished to work best for the fans and move forward. 

Birmingham’s CEO, Garry Cook, said: The club’s board and management are fully aligned and will continue to drive transformation and take bold steps to rebuild Birmingham City into the organisation its fans and community deserve.

The board would like to place on record their sincere thanks to Wayne and Carl for all of their efforts.

“Unfortunately, Wayne’s time with us did not go as planned, and we have decided to move in a different direction. The search for a successor begins with immediate effect, and we will update supporters when we have further news.”

Wayne Rooney’s Statement on his sacking from Birmingham City

Rooney shared his statement and seemed frustrated upon his sacking from Birmingham City. The sacking of Wayne Rooney was announced after just 13 weeks, which needed more time to show progress. According to Wayne Rooney,

“Football is a results business – and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted them to be. However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires, and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed.”

After Sacking of Wayne Rooney, he also thanked the club for giving him the pleasure of being the manager and wished him luck in the future. 

“I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City FC and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club. Finally, I wish Birmingham City FC and its owners my best wishes in the pursuit of their ambitions.”

Wayne Rooney took a break from his professional work life and wishes to spend time with his family. 

He said, “Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback. I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16. Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager”.
