West Indies Built a Platform That Was Not Enough
West Indies posted 295 for 7. On any other day against most other batting lineups, that total is competitive enough to win. Justin Greaves and John Campbell gave them the foundation they needed.
Campbell scored 62 off 60 balls at the top of the order. He hit three sixes and six fours to give West Indies an aggressive start. His opening stand with Greaves produced 135 runs before Campbell was caught off Kuldeep’s left-arm wrist spin in the 20th over.
Greaves carried on to score 101 off 108 balls. His century was composed and well-timed. He hit 12 fours without a six, building West Indies’ innings through accumulation and correct shot selection. His dismissal lbw to Kuldeep at 198 for 4 triggered the collapse in the middle order that defined the second half of West Indies’ innings.
Amir Jangoo’s unbeaten 58 off 43 balls at the death prevented West Indies from collapsing to 220. His seven fours and one six helped push the total to 295. That final number looked challenging at the time. It was not challenging enough.
Kuldeep Yadav’s Four Wickets Were the Difference
If the match belonged to Kohli with the bat, Kuldeep Yadav owned the bowling performance. His 4 for 40 from 10 overs at an economy of 4.00 was the standout bowling display of the first innings.
He dismissed Campbell, Hope, Greaves, and Andrew across his ten overs. The wicket of Hope was particularly important. Prasidh Krishna supported Kuldeep with 2 for 60 from ten overs. Gurnoor Brar went wicketless but maintained economy. The bowling was not spectacular across the board but Kuldeep’s four wickets prevented West Indies from posting the 320-plus total they threatened at various stages.
India’s Chase With Kohli’s Hundred
India needed 296. They got there in 41.4 overs with eight wickets in hand. Three batters scored above 30. Two of them scored centuries. One of them did not even need to bat again.
Rohit Sharma fell for 32 off 35 balls at 74 for 1 in the 12th over. He hit three sixes and provided the aggressive foundation that set the tempo. Alzarri Joseph was the bowler who dismissed him.
Shubman Gill anchored the chase from that point. He was caught by Jewel Andrew off Roston Chase’s bowling for 110 off 108 balls in the 34th over. His century was exactly what a captain needs to provide. Patient, authoritative, and timed perfectly. When he was dismissed, India needed 71 from 96 balls with eight wickets remaining. The match was already over.
Kohli’s 139 Not Out
Kohli was unbeaten on 139 off 88 balls when India crossed the target. Ten fours. Nine sixes. A strike rate of 157.95. He did not give a single chance throughout his entire innings.
His century had come in the 30s of the innings off Motie. He did not stop there. After reaching 106 when the Outlook India live score was last checked mid-innings, he extended his innings across every remaining over until India won. He accelerated in the final ten overs, smashing sixes at will against an increasingly desperate West Indies attack.
Joseph conceded 81 runs from nine overs. Motie gave 66 from ten. Chase gave 64 from ten. Every West Indies bowler was expensive. None could find a way to dismiss Kohli.
