India will become the third team to have played 600 Tests when they take the field in Galle, making them only the third side after England and Australia to reach the landmark. India arrive with a reshaped squad. Jasprit Bumrah is ruled out for the entire series. Auqib Nabi has been drafted in as his replacement. Washington Sundar is unavailable for the first Test. Sai Sudharsan was replaced by Sarfaraz Khan earlier in the tour.
The good news is Shubman Gill is fit. He missed the practice match with a right ring finger injury. India’s spin-bowling coach confirmed he is ready for Galle. Galle Pitch Report: Not the Usual Turner
The biggest tactical surprise of this preview is what Sri Lanka’s captain said about the surface. Dhananjaya de Silva confirmed the pitch will be slightly different from others they have played on in the past.
He said he thinks it will be good for batters and added it is hard to predict exactly how it will play because with the weather around, they haven’t been able to dry it as they normally might. He said he thinks it will be a good batting track.
Don’t expect the usual turner in Galle. Part of it might be tactics, part of it might be the weather around, which has hampered the pitch preparation and has actually left more moisture in the pitch than normal. Ravindra Jadeja
He is India’s most important player in Galle conditions. His left-arm spin will be devastating once the pitch turns. His lower-order batting gives India crucial depth. He has taken wickets here before and knows this surface well. Without Ashwin and Bumrah, he carries more individual responsibility than in any previous India Test in recent years.
Prabath Jayasuriya
He is Sri Lanka’s best weapon. He has taken 86 wickets in 23 Tests at an average of 22.09. He targets right-handers through the bat-pad gap repeatedly on turning pitches.
