WWE headed to Wright State University in Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio for May 9th edition of WWE SmackDown. It was the go-home show for WWE Backlash 2025. John Cena appeared on the show before his title defense against Randy Orton at Backlash. A lot of progress was made in the women’s division on the blue brand. We got the last bit of build for the upcoming matches on Backlash. Let’s delve into WWE SmackDown May 09 Results.
Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa vs Damian Priest and LA Knight

Priest and Knight had an argument about who would start the match. Solo took advantage and attacked Priest, who replied with an Old School crossbody. Sikoa landed a Samoan Drop, followed by a running hip attack by Fatu. He went for it again, but Priest responded with a spinning heel kick. Knight executed a Russian leg sweep on the US Champion. Knight landed a swinging neckbreaker and a couple of jumping elbows.
Priest blindly tagged in and delivered a clothesline to Fatu. He prepared for a chokeslam, but Knight blindly tagged this time. Solo rushed for the spike, but Knight hit a BFT for the victory. Priest and Knight came to blows after the match. Fatu crushed them with multiple hip attacks. Drew McIntyre appeared out of nowhere and delivered a Claymore to the champion.
Winners: LA Knight and Damian Priest
Grades: B+
Analysis: It was a fun match to open the show on a Friday Night. The tensions are brewing between the baby faces as well. In the end, McIntyre stood tall. The anticipation is real for the fatal 4-way match discussed in WWE Backlash 2025 Predictions.
Alexa Bliss and Zelina Vega vs Chelsea Green and Piper Niven

A mystery partner was set up for the Women’s US Champion, Zelina Vega, and it turned out to be the returning Alexa Bliss. The match began with Vega and Green. Soon, Niven got involved, and Vega landed a double 619. A DDT by Zelina allowed Alexa to tag in. Bliss came in strong and delivered a Blockbuster to Chelsea for a two-count.
Bliss landed a dropkick and a Twisted Bliss from the top rope. Niven interrupted and broke the pinfall attempt. Vega hit a Code Red on Niven, followed by a Meteora on the outside. In the ring, Green suffered a Sister Abigail from Bliss. The Goddess pinned her for the win.
Winners: Alexa Bliss and Zelina Vega
Grades: B
Analysis: Welcome back, Alexa Bliss. However, the way she returned, it still looks like WWE still doesn’t have big plans for her. This match was fun. Zelina Vega can make a great US Champion in the women’s division and can help establish the title if booked properly.
The Queen’s Return

Charlotte Flair made her entrance and entered the ring. She credited Tiffany Stratton for beating her at WrestleMania 41 Saturday. She also announced that she’ll make her way back to the world championship. Flair called herself the greatest of all time, and the fans booed. Charlotte wasn’t happy about the fan reaction she received. She asked the crowd to behave, or she’d leave. The crowd continuously booed, and The Queen left the ring. Jade Cargill arrived and had a brief stare-down with Flair. Cargill entered the ring and told Flair to wait in line for a world title opportunity.
Jade Cargill vs Nia Jax

It was for the number one contendership, and the WWE Women’s Champion, Tiffany Stratton, was at the ringside. The match began and landed a Samoan Drop and a leg drop for the win. Back after the break, Jade delivered a Samoan Drop of her own. Nia responded with a powerbomb for a near fall. Cargill landed a frog splash from the top rope. Naomi arrived at the ringside and attacked Stratton. This distracted Jade and Nia delivered a senton and an Annihilator for the win.
Winner: Nia Jax
Grades: B-
Analysis: It was a decent match. Both Nia Jax and Jade Cargill have improved in the ring recently. Although Jax has become the #1 contender, it looks like we’ll get a multi-women’s feud for the WWE Women’s Championship. Also, Charlotte Flair is back, and she’ll be in the line as well.
Street Profits vs Fraxiom

Street Profits had taped ribs, showing the scars of the TLC Match on April 25th episode of SmackDown. Frazer landed a dropkick and a headlock takedown on Dawkins. Dawkins countered with a spinning back elbow, sending Frazer to the outside. Frazer caught Dawkins with a kick to the side of the head, and Fraxiom then double-teamed Dawkins. Fraxiom landed stereo suicide dives to the outside, taking out the WWE Tag Team Champions.
Back from the break, Dawkins hit a power slam on Axiom. Montez followed it with a standing moonsault for a near fall. Street Profits successfully landed a Doomsday Blockbuster on Frazer. Axiom broke the pin and saved the match for his team. Axiom delivered top-rope Spanish Fly on Dawkins, and Frazer followed it up with a Phoenix Splash! Ford broke it up at the last second. In the end, Fraxiom caught Ford and hit the Catapulta Infernal for the win! After the match, all four men shook hands.
Winners: Fraxiom
Grades: B
Analysis: It was a very fun tag match. Fraxiom has been impressive so far on the main roster. Fraxiom pined Street Profits, and sooner or later, they’ll be in pursuit of the tag team championships.
Aleister Black vs Carmelo Hayes

The Miz was at the ringside for his buddy, Carmelo Hayes. The action soon spilled to the outside, where Black landed a springboard moonsault from the middle rope. Hayes fought back with a dropkick that sent Black to the timekeeper’s area. Back in the ring, Black landed another moonsault for a near fall. Melo delivered a superkick, but Black countered it with a brainbuster. The Miz attempted to interrupt, but Black moved away as Hayes mistakenly attacked Miz. This allowed Black to roll Hayes for the pin. The Miz entered the ring after the match and suffered a Black Mass.
Winner: Aleister Black
Grades: B
Analysis: It was a short match and lagged a bit at times. It fell short of expectations. However, WWE might be holding the ultimate match for a future show. Black has been consistently booked on the show, which is great for his momentum.
Rey Fenix and Andrade vs Los Garza (w/ Santos Escobar)

The bell rang, and the Los Garza duo double-teamed Fenix. Andrade tagged in and connected with a suplex. Andrade spiked Berto with a poisonrana. Angel landed a splash on Fenix, followed by Berto’s moonsault for a two-count as Andrade broke the pin. Escobar’s distraction backfired, and Fenix delivered a face-first slam to Berto, followed by a spinning elbow by Andrade. Rey took out Angel with a diving splash at the ringside. Andrade delivered The Message to Berto for the victory.
Winners: Rey Fenix & Andrade
Grades: B-
Analysis: All these matchups are being done to make Rey Fenix look good on screen, and they have done a successful job. Rey Fenix is going on with good momentum. Andrade might turn heel in the coming weeks, initiating a feud with Fenix.
John Cena bashes Randy Orton

The Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena entered the ring. He told the ring announcer to introduce him again. Some fan threw an empty bottle in the ring during this. After the introduction, Cena said that Randy is not here. He said that Orton is with his family in St. Louis. Cena spoke about the significance of a battle between him and Randy Orton. He said that they met 25 years ago and have 31 world titles between them. They were the faces of Ruthless Aggression.
Cena called Orton a liar and told the fans that their childhood would die tomorrow night at Backlash. Cena started shredding Orton. He pointed out the nepotism and called Orton the greatest of all time at wasting potential and at doing the bare minimum. He said that Orton’s 25-year-long career had injuries and bad attitudes. Cena said that Orton is no Legend Killer; he just finished the names that were already irrelevant.
Cena said that tomorrow will be like Randy’s 2006 drug test, which was a failure for The Viper. Someone in Orton’s hoodie appeared, and Cena hit him with an Attitude Adjustment. Real Randy appeared from the back and landed an RKO. Orton raised the title in the air as the show closed.
Grades: A
Analysis: It was a glimpse of John Cena’s greatness on the mic. He brought valid points and targeted Orton’s wrongdoings in the past. It still looks unreal to live in a world where John Cena is a heel against a babyface Randy Orton. They will clash for the final time tomorrow night at WWE Backlash 2025 for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Overall, it was a fun SmackDown episode. The hype surrounding Backlash is unreal, and we can’t wait for John Cena vs Randy Orton. What are your thoughts on WWE SmackDown May 09 Results?
