What Happened in the First T20I

India won the first T20I in Lucknow by eight wickets with 32 balls remaining. West Indies posted 171 for 8. Axar Patel’s sixth over was the defining bowling moment, restricting West Indies to 44 for 3 at the end of the mandatory powerplay. Naman Dhir took wickets on his T20I debut.

India’s chase began with Abhishek Sharma out for 21 and Samson dismissed for 11 inside the powerplay. Then Shreyas Iyer took over. He scored 102 not out off 43 balls for his maiden T20I century. His fifty came in 26 balls. The second fifty arrived in just 17 balls. Ishan Kishan supported with 37 off 27. India chased 172 in 14.4 overs. The match was over before the crowd had settled in properly for the second half.

The Sooryavanshi Question

The most discussed selection story from the first T20I was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s absence from the playing XI. He was in the squad but not selected. Abhishek Sharma opened with Samson instead.

The management now faces that decision again for Ranchi. Sooryavanshi’s form across the Zimbabwe and Afghanistan series made him impossible to drop from the squad. His 18-ball fifty in Zimbabwe remains one of the most talked-about individual innings in Indian T20I cricket this year.

But in a series where India won the first match comfortably without him, the selection argument becomes harder rather than easier. His journey to this point and what his continued squad presence means for India’s T20I planning is explored in our piece on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s stats, records and rise.

West Indies’ Selection Changes for Ranchi

West Indies have strengthened their T20I squad considerably compared to the ODI leg. Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Romario Shepherd, Keemo Paul, and Quentin Sampson all feature in the T20I group. These are players who were not part of the ODI squad.

Hetmyer and Powell specifically add the middle-order hitting power that West Indies’ ODI batting lacked. In the first T20I, West Indies were contained to 171 largely because their batting lineup lost early wickets and never recovered. Hetmyer at number four or five changes that picture significantly. His ability to score quickly from ball one in the middle overs is exactly what West Indies need against India’s disciplined spin attack.

West Indies Probable XI: Shai Hope (c, wk), Kamil Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Roston Chase, Keemo Paul, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Springer, Shamar Joseph.

India’s Probable XI for Ranchi

India have no injury concerns after Lucknow. The only selection debate is whether Sooryavanshi comes in for someone or the first-match winning combination is retained.

Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav have not featured yet in the series. Both are in the squad. With a five-match series, the management will want to give every pace option at least one appearance across the matches. Ranchi could be the match where one of them replaces Kuldeep Yadav or Ravi Bishnoi to give India additional pace variety.

India Probable XI: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav.

JSCA International Stadium Ranchi: Pitch and Ground

The JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi is MS Dhoni’s home ground. It hosted its first international match in 2013. The surface at JSCA typically offers pace and bounce early before flattening out in the middle overs.

The Ranchi surface can provide opportunities for both pace and spin depending on what the match conditions offer. Totals between 160 and 180 are typical in the first innings at this ground in T20 cricket. The ground has hosted some extraordinary matches across Test and T20I cricket since its opening. Ranchi crowds are among the most passionate in Indian cricket, particularly for a West Indies match given Dhoni’s connection to both the ground and the Caribbean in his captaincy years.

Weather Forecast for October 9 in Ranchi

The weather is significantly better for this match than the Lucknow conditions.

DayRain ChanceHigh
October 9 (Match Day)15%27°C
October 1010%28°C
October 11 (3rd T20I)10%27°C

Only 15% rain chance on match day. The forecast is the most favourable across any of the five T20I venues in this series. A full 40-over match in Ranchi under October evening conditions is almost certain.

West Indies’ Strongest T20I Squad in the Series

This West Indies T20I squad is considerably stronger than the ODI group that toured India across the first leg. West Indies have strengthened their own T20I squad considerably compared to the ODI leg.

The addition of Hetmyer, Powell, and Shepherd gives West Indies genuine firepower they simply did not have in the ODI series. Shai Hope continues as captain. His 145 not out in the dead rubber ODI in Chandigarh gave him personal momentum. But the T20I format asks different questions from his batting compared to the ODI role where he anchors the innings.

Their bowling is also more varied in the T20I squad. Shamar Joseph provides raw pace. Shamar Springer offers seam and cutters. Motie’s left-arm spin is their most consistent bowling option. Chase provides off-spin variety. West Indies have a more complete T20I attack than the ODI bowling group that was expensive in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati.

India’s 10-Match Streak: What It Represents

India go into Ranchi on a ten-match T20I winning streak. That run covers Afghanistan, the Asian Games gold medal in Japan, and now the first West Indies match in Lucknow. It is their longest T20I winning run since the period immediately following the T20 World Cup 2024 win in Barbados.

Iyer’s captaincy appointment was specifically designed for building toward the LA 2028 Olympics. Every match in this series is part of that broader preparation cycle. His record as India’s T20I captain, the reasoning behind his selection for this role, and what the West Indies series means for India’s Olympic planning is explored in detail in our piece on why Shreyas Iyer replaced Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain.

Key Individual Battles

Shimron Hetmyer vs Kuldeep Yadav

Hetmyer is West Indies’ most dangerous T20I batter in the middle overs. Kuldeep’s chinaman spin creates specific problems for left-handed batters. His googly to left-handers angling across the body is the delivery that has dismissed multiple experienced batters this series. If Kuldeep gets Hetmyer early in his innings, West Indies lose their primary acceleration weapon.

Shreyas Iyer vs Shamar Joseph

Joseph bowls genuine pace with late movement. His raw speed on the JSCA surface could create difficulties for Iyer that the West Indies bowlers could not produce in Lucknow. Iyer’s response to pace bowling at 140kph-plus is the technical question that defines how aggressive India can be in the first six overs of their chase.

Axar Patel vs West Indies Left-Handers

Axar’s left-arm spin was the most economical bowling performance in the first T20I. West Indies have three significant left-handed batters in Hetmyer, Powell, and Pooran. Axar bowling to left-handers creates the classic arm-ball versus turning delivery challenge that he has exploited consistently against this type of lineup throughout 2026.

Win Prediction

India are strong favourites. Their combination of Iyer’s in-form batting, Axar and Kuldeep’s spin control, and the lethal pace of Arshdeep and Mayank gives them advantages in every phase.

West Indies arrive with a stronger batting lineup than the ODI leg. Hetmyer, Powell, and Shepherd add the aggressive batting quality they lacked in the first three matches. Their bowling is more varied too. If West Indies post 180-plus in Ranchi, this match becomes genuinely competitive.

India win probability: 65%
West Indies win probability: 35%

Conclusion

India lead 1-0. Iyer has a maiden century. West Indies have their strongest T20I lineup now in place with Hetmyer, Powell, and Shepherd all available. The weather is clear. The surface offers pace and spin in equal measure. Ranchi on October 9 gives West Indies their best chance of the series to end India’s winning streak. Everything India have built across ten consecutive T20I wins gets tested in Dhoni’s backyard on Friday night.
