    Biography of Carlos Arroyo

    Carlos Arroyo, a former Puerto Rican professional basketball player, was born on July 30, 1979, in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. He stands 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs 180 pounds. Arroyo attended Florida International University from 1997 to 2001, where he was a star point guard who helped the Golden Panthers to two NCAA Tournament berths.

    Arroyo has played professionally for several NBA and NBA G League clubs, as well as overseas teams in Spain, Greece, and Puerto Rico. He had his NBA career with the Toronto Raptors, Denver Nuggets, and Utah Jazz. Arroyo was a dependable backup point guard known for his quickness, agility, and three-point shooting skills.

    He represented Puerto Rico in international competition, including the 2004 Summer Olympics and several FIBA World Championships. Arroyo has worked as a basketball pundit and coach, as well as in a variety of business enterprises, since retiring from playing.

    National Team Career

    Arroyo was considered one of the best international point guards. Arroyo was the flag-bearer for the delegation at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, and he led the Puerto Rican national team to a 92-73 victory over the United States, scoring 25 points, seven assists, and four steals. Arroyo earned All-Olympic Team honors.

    During the 2006 FIBA World Championship, Arroyo averaged 21.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists in five games for the Puerto Rican team. Arroyo tied for fourth in PPG at the 2006 FIBA World Championship with fellow Puerto Rican Larry Ayuso. Arroyo participated in the 2008 Olympic Qualifying Tournament but was unable to compete in the semifinals or finals due to a leg injury.

    At the 2010 CentroBasket, Arroyo was transferred to the usual shooting guard position, with Barea taking over as the starting point guard. Puerto Rico won its group, defeating Panama in the semifinals and the Dominican Republic in the final to claim the gold medal.

    Arroyo averaged 6.3 assists per game and topped the tournament in points per game (19.3), earning him a spot on the All-Star Team. He was named the event’s most valuable player. Arroyo declined to compete with the team in the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship. On July 9, 2016, Arroyo announced his retirement from the Puerto Rican national team, after fifteen years of service.
