Glenn Maxwell Retires From International Cricket | Career Stats, Records Of Maxwell | Sportsgotec

On a humid night in Mumbai in November 2023, a player who could barely move his feet, with cramps in his legs and a back that kept locking up. He barely stood in the middle of a World Cup match and kept finding ways to send the ball over the boundary. People who watched it live still describe it with a kind of disbelief. That man is Glenn Maxwell.  We are all discussing his achievements because Glenn Maxwell Retires From International Cricket.

A White-ball Career Built on Risk

Maxwell was never a conventional accumulator. His ODI career brought 3,990 runs and 77 wickets in 149 matches, at an average of 33.8. The average looks modest next to the great anchors of the 50-over game, but it hides how fast he scored. His ODI strike rate of 126.70 was the highest in history among batters with at least 2,000 runs, and that tempo came from the middle overs, where most batters are told to consolidate.

He finished with four ODI centuries, and his off-spin added 77 wickets at 47.32. Those numbers show a bowler who was useful rather than dominant, the kind a captain turns to when a partnership needs breaking or an over needs bowling cheaply. Fielding was the third strand of his game, and he was widely rated among the best in the 50-over format.

The 201 Against Afghanistan in CWC23

The innings in the opening paragraph was his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup. Australia were seven wickets down for 91 chasing 292, and the match looked gone. Maxwell, hampered by cramp for much of the innings, took them to a three-wicket win and a place in the semi-finals. It remains the first double century by an Australian in men’s ODIs and, in the minds of many, one of the finest chases the format has produced.

The same tournament also saw him score the fastest World Cup century, off 40 balls against the Netherlands in Delhi. Together the two innings show both ends of his game, the fast burst and the long rescue act.

Three World Cup Champions for Australia

Maxwell’s trophy record is as strong as his individual one. He won two ICC ODI World Cups with Australia, in 2015 and 2023, and he was also part of the side that won the T20 World Cup in 2021, which is why reports describe him as a three-time World Cup winner. Few modern players can claim titles across both limited-overs formats, and he was a regular contributor to each of them rather than a passenger.

The T20I Record of Glenn Maxwell

If the ODI numbers show a hard hitter, the T20I numbers show a record-holder. In 130 T20 internationals he scored 2,897 runs at an average of 28.97 and a strike rate of 154.42. He also took 51 wickets and 62 catches in the format. His five T20I centuries are the joint most in the format, level with India’s Rohit Sharma. His 130 appearances are the most by any Australian player in the format.

The average is not the whole story in T20 cricket, where the value of an innings often lies in how quickly it changes the required rate for the next batter. By that measure, Maxwell spent more than a decade as one of the most consequential players in Australian colours.

The Test Footnote

His Test career was short, with just seven matches, and it ended in 2017. It still contains one notable entry: a century against India in Ranchi that made him the second Australian to score hundreds in all three international formats. Selectors never settled on a long-term place for him in the red-ball side, and he built his reputation almost entirely in the shorter formats.

How The End Came For Maxwell

The final chapter was quieter than the career. He retired from ODIs in June 2025, saying he wanted to give younger players their chance and to focus on T20 cricket. His last T20I was against Oman in February this year.

By then he had been playing a growing share of his cricket in franchise leagues, and earlier this year he spoke of keeping the door open for another run at the 2028 Olympics or the T20 World Cup. Over the following months that door closed, and the announcement this week made it formal. But on the ending note, Glenn Maxwell will be remembered as one of the best finishers of all time.

What Maxwell leaves behind

It is tempting to sum Maxwell up with a list of records, and the list is long enough to justify it: the highest strike rate in ODI history for batters with 2,000 runs, a share of the T20I hundreds record, a World Cup double century and a place in three title-winning squads. But the more lasting legacy may be about permission.

He made unorthodox shots, such as the reverse sweep off fast bowlers and the switch-hit, feel like normal options for Australian batters, and he did it while taking on the risk of looking foolish when they failed. He will keep playing franchise cricket, so supporters will still see him bat, only no longer in the green and gold.
