PSL 12 retentions now have rules, a deadline and plenty of tension. Every franchise faces the same question. Who stays and who goes? The PCB has finally given them the framework to answer it. The choices behind that framework are anything but simple.
What the PCB Announced
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the key PSL 12 rules on October 30. A special operations workshop produced the decisions. Representatives of every franchise attended. They approved the retention rules, auction conditions and squad framework unanimously.
The Retention Deadline: January 13
January 13 is the deadline for PSL 12 retentions. The PCB picked that date with the National T20 Cup in mind. Local players get a window to impress franchises there. Teams can watch domestic form before they commit.
Seven Players, With One Catch
Each franchise can retain up to seven players. That is a big jump from PSL 11, where teams could keep only four. Back then, the four came from the Platinum, Diamond, Gold and Silver categories.
There is one catch this time. A team that keeps all seven must release its most expensive player from the previous auction. That stops franchises from keeping every big name. Expect some hard conversations about the highest paid stars.
The Salary Cap: Rs450 Million
Every franchise gets a salary cap of Rs450 million. That is about $1.6 million. Teams that use direct signings, keep last season’s direct signing, or do both get Rs505 million. That gives them a reason to use the direct route. Our piece on how PSL makes money shows where that cash comes from.
The Minimum Spend: Rs365 Million
Every franchise must also spend at least Rs365 million at the player auction. That sets a floor on squad investment. Teams cannot simply save money and sit back. Every side has to build a real roster.
Direct Signings Stay Open Until November 23
The direct signing window runs until November 23. Franchises can directly sign only overseas players who missed the last two PSL seasons. That rule pushes teams toward fresh faces.
Players who featured in the last two editions are out of that pool. Our list of PSL 2025 foreign players shows part of that group.
What the PSL CEO Said
PSL Chief Executive Officer Salman Naseer called the workshop an important milestone. He praised the open discussions and the transparency shown by every stakeholder. The franchises reviewed the auction rules together. Then they approved them without a single objection.
What Happens Next
The framework is now final. Franchises can start planning their squads. They can study National T20 Cup form and chase overseas targets. They also have to decide who stays before January 13.
The most expensive names face the toughest calls. Seven retentions sound generous. The release rule makes them costly.
Conclusion
The PSL 12 retentions picture is now clear. Franchises can keep seven players. The deadline is January 13. The cap is Rs450 million, or Rs505 million for teams using direct signings. Every side must spend at least Rs365 million at the auction. Direct signings close on November 23. The rules are set. The hard decisions start now.
