Pakistan Reach Asian Games Final After Beating Bangladesh by 6 Wickets | Sportsgotec

Thirteen overs. A young Pakistan squad without their biggest names. A Bangladesh side that came in as favourites. And a gold medal match that Pakistan cricket has never played in before. Something shifted at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on October 1. Sufyan Moqim took three wickets. Abdul Samad batted Pakistan home. And a slice of history was written without anyone truly expecting it to happen.

Bangladesh’s Innings

Pakistan chose to bowl first on a wet morning in Nisshin. The match was rain-reduced to 13 overs per side. Bangladesh needed to attack from ball one to give their bowling attack something to defend.

They lost three wickets in the first three and a half overs. Tanzid Hasan fell for seven to Arafat Minhas in the second over. Litton Das was bowled by Saim Ayub for two. Parvez Emon followed immediately for just one run. Bangladesh were 21 for 3 inside 3.2 overs. The top order had collapsed before any acceleration was possible.

Towhid Hridoy was Bangladesh’s salvation. He scored 42 off just 25 balls with four sixes and two fours at a strike rate of 168. His partnership with Mosaddek Hossain added 53 runs for the fifth wicket across 28 balls and took Bangladesh from 45 for 4 to 98 for 4. Both fell in quick succession in the 11th over. Rishad Hossain was run out on the final ball of the 13th over.

The 19 extras in the Bangladesh innings were significant. Fifteen wides added 15 free runs without a delivery being faced. That contribution inflated Bangladesh’s total by approximately 15 to 20 runs. On a flat Nisshin surface, those extras could have been decisive. They nearly were.

Sufyan Moqim’s Three Wickets

The Antigua Barbuda Falcons spinner who took four wickets in the CPL 2026 final was the standout Pakistan bowler in this semi-final. Sufyan Moqim took three wickets for 26 from three overs at an economy of 8.66.

He removed Towhid Hridoy, Mosaddek Hossain, and Saif Hassan across his three overs. Hridoy was the most important dismissal. Saim Ayub took Litton Das’s wicket for just three runs from two overs at an extraordinary economy of 1.50. His spell of 1 for 3 was the most economical bowling performance in the match.

Arafat Minhas took two wickets. Ahmed Daniyal, Abrar Ahmed, and Mohammad Wasim shared the remaining overs without taking wickets, but Daniyal conceded only 15 from two overs to maintain discipline at the top.

The Chase: From 53 for 4 to Historic Victory

Pakistan began their chase with intent. Maaz Sadaqat, the CPL 2026 Eliminator hero, hit 15 off seven balls including two fours and a six before being caught by Hridoy off Nasum Ahmed in the second over.

Captain Sahibzada Farhan fell first ball of the match for just one to Mahedi Hasan. Pakistan were 6 for 1 after the first over. Maaz then fell at 16 for 2 in the second. The chase wobbled early.

Saim Ayub steadied things with 21 off 12 balls. He hit two sixes and a four at a strike rate of 175. His dismissal by Mustafizur caught at long-on left Pakistan 38 for 3. Usman Khan then fell for 14 off nine at 53 for 4. Pakistan needed 59 from 42 balls with six wickets in hand. That equation was tight but manageable.

The Nawaz-Samad Partnership That Won the Semi-Final

Hasan Nawaz and Abdul Samad came together with Pakistan at 53 for 4. They needed 59 from 42 balls. They got there from the first ball of the 11th over.

Nawaz finished unbeaten on 27 off 22 balls with two fours and two sixes. Samad was unbeaten on 30 off just 15 balls with five fours and a six at a strike rate of 200. Their unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 59 off approximately 28 balls won the match for Pakistan. Samad hit Rishad Hossain for back-to-back fours in the 11th over to take Pakistan over the line.

Pakistan won in 11.3 overs. With 9 balls to spare. They needed 112. They got 112 for 4. Six wickets in hand at the end.

Pakistan Reach Asian Games Final

This is the first time Pakistan have reached the gold medal match at the Asian Games cricket competition. They have competed in every edition since 2010. No previous Pakistan squad had ever made a final. Sahibzada Farhan’s young squad, without Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and every other senior white-ball regular, has done what their more experienced predecessors never achieved.

The significance of this achievement for Pakistan’s next generation of cricketers is enormous. Every player in this squad today is now the first Pakistani to play in an Asian Games cricket final. That distinction belongs to them permanently. The way Pakistan cricket manages its next generation of leadership through tournaments like these is explored in our piece on Pakistan cricket team captaincy past and future.

The Gold Medal Match on October 3

Pakistan’s final opponent is either India or Sri Lanka from the second semi-final. India are heavy favourites to win that fixture. If India win, October 3 in Nisshin becomes India vs Pakistan for the Asian Games gold medal.

Both sides have a stake in the Olympic qualification conversation that surrounds this entire tournament. The results at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 feed directly into ICC rankings and Olympic qualification pathways toward the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The semi-final of Asian Games cricket and what Olympic qualification means for Shreyas Iyer’s India and their T20 planning heading into 2028 is explored in our piece on why Shreyas Iyer was appointed India’s T20I captain for the Olympic cycle.

Conclusion

Pakistan beat Bangladesh by six wickets in 11.3 overs at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on October 1. Bangladesh scored 111 for 7 from 13 overs. Hridoy’s 42 was their only significant contribution. Moqim took three wickets. Saim Ayub bowled one for three from two overs. Pakistan wobbled at 53 for 4 before Nawaz and Samad put on an unbroken 59 to win. Pakistan are in the Asian Games cricket final for the first time in their history. Without their biggest names. In Japan. On October 3. That is the day that decides whether this extraordinary journey ends with gold or silver.
