10. Return of Daniel Bryan
Daniel Bryan’s debut came as a part of The Nexus. On Their debut, Nexus members destroyed Raw, including cameramen, announcers and other staff. A particular spot featured Bryan legit choking ring announcer Justin Roberts with his tie. This act breached the limits of the WWE PG Era. Hence, Daniel Bryan was fired after this.
But this firing faced a massive backlash from fans, and even some wrestlers were against it. Bryan returned later that year at Summerslam as a part of Team Cena in the main event against The Nexus. It was entirely unexpected for the fans, and their reaction was obvious.
9. Brock Lesnar knocks out Randy Orton
Brock Lesnar vs Randy Orton’s match at Summerslam 2016 saw an unexpected finish. The Beast busted open The Viper in the end. The Beast threw elbow strikes at Orton, resulting in a busted open head of the Viper. The fans wished to see a great and clean finish to the match, but the match ended with a technical knock-out(TKO).
Much happened backstage after this match; some considered it an unscripted finish. Chris Jericho even confronted Lesnar after the match, but Vince McMahon told Jericho that the finish was planned entirely and both parties had agreed to it. It was later revealed that UFC promoted this match, and a promo was shown at UFC 200. WWE planned this to give UFC fans a UFC kind of finish.
8. Seth Rollins became Double Champ
Seth Rollins was WWE World Heavyweight Champion after a successful cash-in in the main event in the Reigns vs Lesnar match at Wrestlemania 31. Therefore, the moment is known as The Heist of the Century. The same night John Cena became the new US Champion. Later in the same year, at Summerslam 2015, the two clashed in a Title vs Title winner-take-all match.
In the final moments of the match, former daily show comic Jon Stewart interfered in the match as the referee was down. Stewart assaulted Cena with a chair shot. Rollins executed a pedigree to Cena onto the chair and pinned him successfully to become the first superstar ever to hold the WWE World Heavyweight and the US Title simultaneously. The incident was so unexpected that it joined the WWE Summerslam moments as Cena was never the underdog in the match.
7. Shane-O-Mac High Jump
Shane McMahon’s whole career is full of wild things and risky bumps. The main highlight at the start of his career was a massive bump from the entrance stage at Summerslam 2000. The match featured Shane against Blackman.
Both men were on the entrance stage in the match’s final moments. Blackman threw some blows on Shane, and then came the unexpected yet crazy moment as Shane McMahon fell off the stage into a dumpster. In my view, it was wholly unexpected, and Shane was in everyone’s mind after this.
6. Brock Lesnar Returns in 2021
Wrestlemania 36 featured the Royal Rumble Winner Drew McIntyre winning the WWE Championship by defeating The Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar. After this, Brock Lesnar disappeared from WWE TV. A few months later, rumours about WWE not renewing their contract with Brock started circulating.
Something unexpected happened at Summerslam 2021. The main event featured Roman Reigns defending the Universal Championship against the 16-time world champion John Cena. Hence, The Tribal Chief defeated Cena in that match. After the battle, Brock Lesnar shockingly returned and confronted The Head Of The Table. This was one of the important unexpected WWE Summerslam moments.
5. Randy Cashes in his Briefcase on Daniel Bryan
WWE Summerslam 2013 build saw WWE Champion John Cena picking Daniel Bryan as his opponent. The match overall was excellent, and in the finish, Bryan pinned Cena to fulfil his dream and become the WWE Champion. The unique guest referee, Triple H, turned on Bryan and hit him with a pedigree.
This was also a shocker, but then something unexpected happened. Mr Money in the Bank Randy Orton walked down to the ring and cashed in to win the WWE Championship.
4. Lesnar Squashes John Cena
WWE Summerslam 2014 featured a huge main event between The Cenation leader John Cena and The Beast Brock Lesnar for the World Heavyweight Championship. This was a squash match as Lesnar wrecked Cena. Surprisingly, Nobody in a million ever expected a thrashing like this. Lesnar hit Cena with sixteen suplexes.
There were few flurries from Cena only. Brock thoroughly enjoyed punishing Cena and ended the punishment on his terms when he hit Cena with an F-5 to win the match. The match was the best squash match of all time and was completely unexpected as Lesnar’s opponent was 15-time World Champ John Cena.
3. The Demon is Champion
July 19, 2016, the day the WWE brand split started again. World Champion at that time was Dean Ambrose, who was drafted to Smackdown, leaving the Raw brand with no world title. The July 25, 2016 episode of Monday Night Raw featured WWE introducing a new world title, WWE Universal Championship. Seth was Raw’s first draft pick, so he was in the match to crown the new Champion. Two fatal 4-way matches were held where the winners were Roman Reigns and Finn Balor. They squared off against each other, and Balor was victorious. So it was now Rollins vs Balor at Summerslam 2016 for the Universal Championship.
Finn Balor entered the match with his alter ego, The Demon King, to battle The Architect. The Demon slew Rollins to win, becoming the first-ever WWE Universal Champion. This was unexpected, as many fans were rooting for Rollins. This was Balor’s PPV debut also, so becoming the World Champion looked like the beginning of a massive career for Balor ahead. But something unfortunate happened as he had to relinquish the title the next day due to a shoulder injury. Balor winning was one of the most valuable and unexpected WWE Summerslam moments.
2. Roman Reigns’ Heel Turn
At Wrestlemania 36, fans would see a dream match between Goldberg and The Big Dog Roman Reigns. But the pandemic hit WWE also. Reigns had just gotten over leukaemia in 2019, so he pulled himself out of the match for his health and safety. Braun Strowman later replaced him. Roman Reigns disappeared from WWE for a few months.
The Summerslam 2020’s main event saw The Fiend Bray Wyatt vs Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship. The Fiend won that match, but the unexpected happened after the match when Roman Reigns returned. Not only did he return, but he returned with a heel character as The Tribal Chief. The move got an instant reaction as WWE never pulled this one before. This is undoubtedly one of the most significant unforeseen moments in WWE Summerslam history.
1. The Undertaker vs The Undertaker
The Undertaker rested from WWE after Yokozuna defeated him in a casket match at Royal Rumble 1994. After some weeks, Ted Dibiase claimed that he had found The Undertaker. The man was an impostor, Undertaker. He was a bad character, and Dibiase presented him as greedy for money.
Then returned the real Undertaker, and both squared off in the main event of Summerslam 1994 to determine who the real one was. In the final moments of the match, the real Undertaker hit the Impostor with three Tombstone Piledrivers to win the match.
