10. Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk TLC Match
The backstory of this match is quite interesting. Jeff was World Heavyweight Champion then, and his contract was expiring. He signed a new one-month contract with WWE for this match.
The match was The Charismatic Enigma Jeff Hardy vs The Best in the World CM Punk in tables, ladders, and chairs match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Summerslam 2009. The match was overall tremendous, but there was one jaw-dropping moment. Hardy hit Punk with a Swanton Bomb off the 20 feet ladder. In the end, when both men were on the ladder, Punk threw punches at Hardy, and he fell. CM Punk grabbed the title and became the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Later, Jeff Hardy signed with TNA.
9. CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar
Paul Heyman betrayed CM Punk at Money in the Bank 2013 and aligned himself with The Beast Brock Lesnar. This led to a heated rivalry between Punk and Lesnar, with Heyman adding fuel to the fire. The rivalry headed to a match at Summerslam 2013, probably Punk’s last best match in WWE.
The match sent a loud and clear message to everyone that CM Punk can defeat A Beast like Brock Lesnar on his own, and it also proved how good Brock could be in the ring if he tries well. This was a No Holds Barred match. Even though only a steel chair was utilized in the match, the match was still violent because of both men’s intensity and hatred.
At one point, Punk hit Lesnar with GTS, that would have been the end, but Heyman made the save by breaking the pin. In the end, Lesnar would F-5 Punk onto the chair to get the victory. No doubt, one of the top 10 Summerslam matches of all time.
8. AJ Styles vs John Cena
John Cena vs AJ Styles stole the show at Summerslam 2016. It was a rematch of their Classic match at Money in the Bank, but it delivered more than expected. Cena’s performance was excellent, and you can’t doubt AJ Styles’ skills that made the match one of the best Summerslam matches.
The match was all about ”who’s the face of the company” as Styles continuously told the Cenation Leader that he is fading now and his time is over in WWE. The Phenomenal One emerged victorious in the match and cemented his spot as “The face that runs the place.”
7. Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero
The story of this match revolved around Mysterio’s eight-year-old son Dominic. Eddie reveals himself as Dominic’s father. This highly personal rivalry led to a match at Summerslam 2005. During the match, a briefcase was hung above the ring with Dominic’s custody papers inside it. The match featured great high flying and crazy moves from the ladder. The springboard seated senton performed by Mysterio on Eddie was incredible. Guerrero once hit Rey with a sunset flip powerbomb off the ladder.
In the end, when Guerrero was on the verge of winning the match, his wife Vickie Guerrero interfered in the match. She pushed the ladder, and Eddie fell as a result. Vickie held down Eddie, and Mysterio retrieved the briefcase to win the match. Vickie cost Eddie the match as she knew he was only concerned with hurting Rey and never actually wanted to be Dominic’s father. In the end, we saw an angry Eddie as The Mysterio family celebrated. The emotional match is one of the top 10 summerslam matches.
6. John Cena vs Seth Rollins
At Summerslam 2015, a winner takes all match was announced between the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins and The US Champion John Cena. The host of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart, was announced as the host of Summerslam. The build to the match features Rollins mocking Jon Stewart, and there were a few heated exchanges between them.
Talking about the match, it was a classic match that showed how good Seth and Cena are in the ring. At one point, Rollins even hit Cena with an AA executed perfectly. The match was fantastic, but the finish was heavily criticized. During the final moments of the match, Stewart interfered in the match. Fans expected him to go against The Architect, but he attacked The Cenation leader John Cena with a steel chair. He also set a chair in the middle of the ring, allowing Seth Rollins to hit a pedigree onto the chair for the win.
The match’s aftermath was even worse as Jon Stewart revealed that he screwed Cena and did not want him to break the record of Ric Flair. That made no sense at all. If Rollins had won clearly without interference, that match surely deserved a spot in the top 3 in this list.
5. CM Punk vs John Cena
Cena vs Punk was one of the best (if not the best) rivalries of all time as it gave us excellent quality wrestling matches, even a 5-star classic. Punk left the company with the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank in 2011. So a tournament was organized to crown the new Champion. John Cena won the tournament and became WWE Champion. CM Punk shockingly returned during an episode of WWE Raw. So with two Champs in the company, WWE announced a title vs title match at Summerslam 2011 to crown the undisputed WWE Champion. Triple H was the special guest referee.
Even after their 5-star match at Summerslam, this match was no disappointment for the fans. Both superstars sometimes even kicked out of each other’s finishing maneuvers. In the end, CM Punk won the bout and became the Undisputed WWE Champion. Punk’s celebration didn’t last long as Kevin Nash returned and delivered a Jackknife powerbomb on him, allowing Alberto Del Rio to cash in and capture the WWE Championship. Cena and Punk summer rivalry surely has a place in top 10 summerslam matches.
4. Brock Lesnar vs Kurt Angle
Kurt Angle was WWE Champion heading into Summerslam 2003. Brock Lesnar vs Kurt Angle for the WWE Championship was set for Summerslam 2003. Nine days before the match, things became quite interesting when Lesnar aligned himself with the villainous Vince McMahon. This was a top-class match. Lesnar tapped out to the ankle lock at one in the match, but the referee was down. Then Lesnar hit Angle with the famous F-5 on one leg, but Angle kicked out.
There was a look of disbelief on the faces of Brock Lensar and Vince McMahon. In the end, Angle again executed an ankle lock, and Brock tapped out. The referee saw it this time and called for the bell. The Gold-medalist Kurt Angle retained the WWE Championship with angry Brock and Vince McMahon watching.
3. Fatal four-way for the Universal Championship
The Universal Title picture was complicated heading into Summerslam 2017. Three prominent men Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns, and Samoa Joe, were challenging The Beast Brock Lesnar for the Universal Title. Raw GM Kurt Angle officially announced a fatal 4-way match between Reigns, Strowman, Joe, and Lesnar at the Biggest Party of the Summer.
The match was fierce. In the starting, we saw that every man took down Lesnar. Samoa Joe applied the Coquina Clutch on Lesnar; Roman crashed him with a spear through the barricade, and Strowman power-slammed him through the announcer’s table. Brock was down and out and was taken away for medical care. But the Champ returned to the action soon, and now he was unleashed. He applied Kimura Lock on Strowman and took down Joe with the F-5.
In the end, The Big Dog hit Lesnar with three Superman punches. As he was going for a spear, Brock countered it into F-5. One..two..three, and The Beast Brock Lesnar is still the Universal Champion. This match is undoubtedly one of the brutal, fatal 4-way matches of WWE history.
2. The Undertaker vs Edge
The Undertaker and Edge collided inside the first Hell in a Cell match of the WWE PG Era at Summerslam 2008. The storyline started long ago at Survivor Series 2007. Edge beat Taker in a TLC match, and The Deadman disappeared for some time. Vickie Guerrero brought The Phenom back to get revenge on her cheating husband, Edge. Hence, this led to a final match at Summerslam inside the cell.
The match was great, and there was a complete display of the stipulation. We saw the use of chairs, ladders, steel steps, and tables. In the end, The Undertaker hit Edge with a Tombstone Piledriver and secured the victory via pinfall. It was a highly violent and brutal match with many weapons and no blood. It is one of the top 10 best summerslam matches.
1. Daniel Bryan vs John Cena
During the build to Summerslam 2013, WWE Champion John Cena picked Daniel Bryan as his opponent for the summer’s biggest event. Triple H was a special guest referee. The master of the Yes movement was beloved at that time, which can be seen in the match. There were thunderous “Yes” chants during the match. Cena got heavy boos.
The match was excellent, and we even saw Cena performing some great moves that he had never performed. Cena performed a suplex outside the ring, and the crowd chanted “Holy Sh*t” but soon they were again hating Cena with “You can’t wrestle” chants. At one point, Bryan trapped Cena in his submission move, STF. Bryan also hit Cena with a Superplex from the top rope, followed by a flying headbutt, and the crowd went crazy.
In the end, a huge running knee, and this is it. Dream fulfilled, and here’s the new WWE Champion, Daniel Bryan. “Yes,Yes,Yes” chants were blowing off the Arena’s roof. HHH never interfered in the match. But that was not the end as Randy Orton walked out with the MITB briefcase in hand. Suddenly, Triple H attacked Bryan with a pedigree allowing Orton to cash in and capture the WWE Title.
Although Bryan didn’t get the last laugh, that match made him a megastar and took him to a new level. Here we complete the list of top 10 summerslam matches.
