BCCI has come with bold move in replacing Suryakumar Yadav as T20 Captain. Suryakumar Yadav, who became Indian T20 captain after Rohit Sharma’s retirement, will be set to be replaced by Shreyas Iyer, as per reports. There are many different opinions about losing of Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy. As BCCI is looking for a new Captain for the LA28 Olympics with the T20 World Cup 2028, which will be hosted in Australia. So, in this case it becomes very important that BCCI will give the responsibility to lead the side to a player who has confidence and performance under his belt.
Why Suryakumar Yadav as T20 Captain
Surya Kumar carried the legacy of Rohit Sharma in T20 cricket with excellent performance. After 2024 World Cup win, India has never lose a single T20 series home or away. India won T20 series in South Africa, Australia and Asia Cup 2025. These performances shows how powerful the team was under the leadership of SKY.
The real reason is not about the team performance as India also won the back to back T20 World Cup title. Surya Kumar Yadav became 3rd Indian captain to win ICC T20 World Cup. But the individual performance of Surya was below par after T20 World Cup 2024.
Suryakumar Yadav scored 242 runs in T20 World Cup 2026 with the best score of 84* against USA. After that Surya Kumar Yadav failed to deliver impactful performance in whole tournament with the bat. Even in Asia Cup 2025, Surya Kumar scored only 72 runs with 47* highest.
Even in Bilateral series, Surya Kumar Yadav was very ordinary with the bat. Therefore BCCI decided to move on from him to make New T20 captain. In 2028, India will play couple of major T20 tournament with LA28 Olympics and T20 World Cup 2028. So, India looks to make a powerful captain who has given performances with the bat and bowl as well.
Shreyas Iyer’s Staggering Redemption & Leadership Pedigree
Shreyas Iyer is booming in the list of becoming the next T20 captain of Indian cricket team. Although, Shreyas Iyer played the most recent T20 game in 2023. After that Iyer has failed to take place in Indian squad. But his extraordinary performances in IPL in recent 3 season makes his name pop up in Indian T20 future captain list.
Iyer has led 3 IPL franchises. He is the only captain also to take 3 different franchises in IPL final as captain of DC, KKR and PK. Shreyas Iyer won the IPL title as captain of KKR in IPL 2024. Interesting, Gautam Gambhir was the head coach of KKR at that time.
Therefore, it can be perfect match to make strong T20 side of India cricket side for next 3-4 years. Shreyas Iyer has scored 1100 runs in recent couple of IPL season in middle order for Indian cricket team. Therefore, he can became excellent pick for Indian cricket team in middle order and leader as well.
